B. Serial verb construction: in situ vs. displaced na- focus

In situ focus is rare and has not been dealt with in the literature. But see Bearth (1999): "The inferential gap condition". Pragmatics 9/2. 249-280, especially pp. 255-262, which deals with Akan in situ focus.

1. ÏÀdeà kaáaà noà kõàõà NÀkraàn.

"He went to Accra by car."

1a. ÏÀdeà kaáaà noà naà kõáõà NÀkraàn.

He took the car, not the airplane, then went to Accra."

1b. Kaáaà noà naà õàdeá kõáõà NÀkraàn.

"The car was the reason why he went to Accra."

2. ÏÀtõàõà kaáaà kõàõà Kuàmaáseá.

"He bought a car and went to Kumasi."

2a. ÏÀtõàõà kaáaà naà kõáõà Kuàmaáseá.

"He bought a car (instead of a bike), then went to Kumasi."

2b. Kaáaà naà õàtõá kõáõà Kuàmaáseá.

"It was a car that he bought and went to Kumase with."

3. ÏÀtõàõà kaáaà.

"He bought a car."

3a. *ÏÀtõàõà kaáaà naà.

*"It was a car that he bought."

3b. Kaáaà naà õàtõááõàeà.

"It was a car that he bought."
